I think so. That way you know what the person is all about. You aren't just jumping into a relationship, you've been friends for a good amount of time. It depends how deeply you can get to know someone. When you can feel safe in the knowledge that whatever happens they are on your side, then that trust is there, and you are more likely to open up and share your deepest hopes, fears, ambitions successes and failures.
I got to know a hot babe a while back now, in November it will be 27 yrs we have been married, and she can still surprise me.
